USMB is a producer of thixotropic alkyd resins. Valithix resins are polyamide modified alkyds for the decorative coatings market.
Thixotropy is a shear thinning property. Certain gels or viscous fluids flow over time when shaken or agitated. They then take a fixed time to return to a more viscous state. The longer the fluid undergoes shear stress, the lower its viscosity. Thixotropic fluids are called pseudo-plastic fluids.
Thixotropy is the reversible behavior of certain gels that liquefy when they are shaken or stirred and reset after being allowed to stand.
The benefits of thixotropy in coating formulations are:
- Pigment suspension
- Ease of application
- Non –drip application
- Reduced sagging
- Good leveling
